Granite is one of the hardest rocks found in nature, making it a challenging material for sand production. Traditional impact crushers struggle with granite due to rapid hammer wear, high maintenance costs, and excessive fines generation. This case study examines how a granite sand production plant overcame these challenges by adopting HSM’s double-roll crushers, achieving consistent output, extended equipment life, and significantly reduced operating costs.
A granite sand production facility was facing the typical struggles of processing high-hardness rock. Their existing setup relied heavily on impact-based crushing equipment, which resulted in:
Rapid wear on crushing components: Granite’s high silica content caused hammers and impact plates to wear out quickly, requiring frequent replacements.
Excessive fines generation: Impact crushing produced too much stone powder, lowering the quality of the finished sand and reducing its market value.
High operating costs: Frequent downtime for maintenance and replacement parts drove up production costs and reduced overall efficiency.
Inconsistent product quality: The sand produced often had poor particle shape and uneven gradation, failing to meet construction sand standards.
The plant needed a solution that could process granite efficiently while maintaining consistent product quality and controlling operating costs.

After evaluating multiple equipment options, the customer selected HSM’s double-roll crushers as the core of their sand production line. The system configuration included:
Three jaw crushers: Serving as primary and secondary crushers, these units reduced the feed material to approximately 1cm in size.
One 1510 double-roll crusher: This unit served as the primary sand-making machine, accepting feed material under 5cm and producing finished sand under 3mm.
One 1080 double-roll crusher: This unit provided additional capacity and flexibility, allowing the plant to handle varying production demands.
The double-roll crushers operate on a lamination crushing principle – two rollers rotate in opposite directions at low speed, continuously compressing and grinding the material rather than impacting it. Unlike high-speed impact crushers, this approach applies controlled compressive force that breaks granite along natural fracture planes, producing a more uniform, cubical product with significantly reduced fines.

After implementing the HSM solution, the plant achieved substantial improvements across all key performance indicators:
Stable and reliable production
With a total production capacity of 150-200 tons per hour, the line operates continuously and reliably. The robust design of HSM double-roll crushers ensures stable performance even under demanding conditions, making them ideal for high-volume sand production operations.
Extended equipment life
HSM’s proprietary cast alloy roller skins deliver exceptional wear resistance. Even when crushing abrasive granite, a single set of roller skins can maintain a service life of 1 to 3 years under normal operating conditions. This dramatic reduction in replacement frequency significantly lowers maintenance costs and minimizes production interruptions.
Superior sand quality

The double-roll lamination process produces sand with excellent particle shape and gradation. The finished product features a cubical shape with low flakiness content, meeting construction sand standards. The controlled compressive force reduces over-crushing, meaning less stone powder and a higher yield of usable sand.
Lower operating costs
The low-speed, high-torque design consumes significantly less energy than impact crushers. Combined with reduced wear part consumption and minimal downtime, the HSM solution delivers a substantially lower cost per ton of finished sand.
The production manager reported that the HSM double-roll crushers transformed their operations. The plant now runs continuously without the frequent shutdowns that plagued their previous setup. Sand quality is consistent and meets all applicable standards, allowing them to command higher prices in the market. The extended service life of the roller skins has dramatically reduced their maintenance budget and improved overall profitability.
This case demonstrates that HSM double-roll crushers offer a proven solution for granite sand production:
Effective on hard materials: The lamination crushing principle is ideally suited for high-hardness rocks like granite.
Long service life: Proprietary cast alloy roller skins deliver long service life, drastically reducing replacement frequency.
High-quality output: Produces cubical, well-graded sand with low fines content.
Cost-effective: Low energy consumption and minimal maintenance requirements deliver a competitive cost per ton.
