Can a Double Roll Crusher Only Be Used for Sand Making?
Many users, when first introduced to double roll crushers, tend to equate them directly with “sand making equipment”. Indeed, in the aggregate industry, the double roll crusher has become the mainstay for producing high-quality manufactured sand thanks to its excellent particle shape control and low fines generation. However, thinking it can only be used for sand making greatly underestimates its capabilities – the double roll crusher plays an equally indispensable role in mineral processing.
I. Sand Making: Excellent Shape, Controllable Fines – Its Core Strength
In a manufactured sand production line, the double roll crusher is typically used as a medium or fine crushing device, reducing 5–10 cm stones down to 0–5 mm finished sand. Compared to a vertical shaft impact (VSI) crusher, it uses low‑speed compression or shearing, avoiding the over‑crushing caused by high‑speed impact. As a result, the sand particles are cubical with low flakiness content, and fines can be kept within 10%–15%.
Moreover, the roll shells are made of high‑chromium wear‑resistant alloy or tungsten carbide studs, lasting thousands of hours without frequent hammer replacement – significantly lowering operating costs. These advantages make the double roll crusher a popular choice for crushing hard materials such as river pebbles, granite, and limestone.
II. Mineral Processing: Fine Crushing & Pre‑grinding to Relieve the Ball Mill
In the mining industry, the double roll crusher (and the high pressure grinding roll) is widely used for fine crushing of metallic and non‑metallic ores. It is normally placed downstream of the cone crusher and upstream of the ball mill, reducing 2–3 cm ore particles down to 1–5 mm or even finer.
Take iron ore, gold ore, and manganese ore as examples. Processing these ores through a double roll crusher before feeding them to the ball mill achieves the principle of “more crushing, less grinding” , significantly lowering the ball mill’s energy consumption and steel ball consumption. One case study shows that after an iron ore plant replaced its fine cone crusher with a double roll crusher, the ball mill’s specific energy consumption dropped by 15%–20%, while throughput increased by 25%.
In addition, for non‑metallic minerals such as phosphate ore, bauxite, and silica, the double roll crusher also performs very well. It achieves preliminary liberation of valuable minerals from gangue without generating excessive slimes, creating favourable conditions for downstream flotation or magnetic separation.
III. Multi‑purpose Machine, Flexible for Different Process Requirements
The roll gap of a double roll crusher is adjustable (1–20 mm), allowing users to freely set the discharge size according to downstream process needs. Whether it is 0–5 mm for sand making or 3–10 mm for mineral processing, it can be easily achieved through hydraulic or spring adjustment. At the same time, the equipment has a compact structure and a small footprint, suitable for both new production lines and retrofitting existing ones.
