Working Principle

Cone crusher relies on the gyratory motion of the mantle, driven by an eccentric assembly. When the mantle approaches the concave, it compresses the material; when it moves away, the material is discharged. This “compression + bending” crushing method offers high throughput but is relatively coarse in its crushing action.

Roll crusher relies on two counter-rotating rolls that apply sustained compressive force to the material, achieving crushing through compression and shearing. The material is uniformly compressed within the roll gap, fracturing along natural textures and fissures. The crushing process is more controlled and gentle.

Product Particle Size and Shape

Cone crushers typically produce a discharge size ranging from 10–30mm, with a relatively high percentage of flaky and elongated particles (generally above 15%). Achieving finer particle sizes often requires additional downstream fine crushing equipment.

Roll crushers offer flexible discharge size control between 1–20mm, with online hydraulic gap adjustment for precise particle sizing. The finished product contains a higher proportion of cubical particles, lower flaky and elongated content, and significantly lower over-grinding rates compared to cone crushers. This makes roll crushers more suitable for sand-making applications that demand precise particle size control.

Material Suitability

Cone crushers are suitable for high-hardness materials (compressive strength ≤300MPa), such as granite, iron ore, and basalt. However, they are sensitive to material moisture content and can experience clogging when processing wet materials.

Roll crushers are suitable for medium-hardness materials (compressive strength up to 250MPa), such as limestone, coal gangue, and pebbles. They offer high tolerance to moisture content, are not prone to clogging, and can stably process wet materials.
